Learning Special Harakat in Our Quran Reading Session
In this weekend’s session, we continued building our Quran reading skills by learning about three special harakat: vertical fathah, vertical kasrah, and inverse dammah.
We began by looking closely at what each of these marks looks like and where they appear in Quranic text. Recognizing their shapes is an important step in becoming more confident when reading directly from the mushaf.
Next, we practised with individual Arabic letters, focusing on how each harakah affects the sound of the letter. This step helped everyone hear and repeat the correct pronunciation while becoming familiar with the visual form of each mark.
After this, we moved on to reading practice with words that contain vertical fathah and vertical kasrah. This allowed participants to apply what they had just learned and strengthen their reading fluency through guided practice.
We introduced inverse dammah as well and learned to recognize it, but we will leave the reading practice for inverse dammah until next weekend, so that we can continue reinforcing it together.
The deck we used is as follows:
You are warmly invited to join our next session on Learning to Read the Quran. These meetups are for women only and are designed to be welcoming and beginner-friendly. Each session includes a short introduction to a concept followed by practical reading practice, helping participants steadily grow their confidence in reading the Quran.
We look forward to continuing the learning together at the next meetup.
