Learn to Read the Quran – Lesson XXIII

Posted on January 18, 2026February 17, 2026 by Learning Labs

At our recent community meetup, we continued our Arabic-for-Qur’an learning journey with a focused practice session on long vowels, building on what we had covered in the previous class.

In the last session, we introduced the three long vowels (Huruf al-Madd): Alif (aa), Waw (oo), and Ya (ee). This week’s session was dedicated to strengthening that understanding through structured reading and repetition.

Focused Practice on Long Vowels

The aim of this session was reinforcement rather than new theory. We concentrated on:

  • Holding the long vowel sound for two counts
  • Maintaining consistency in length
  • Avoiding shortening or overextending the madd
  • Developing a steady and controlled rhythm

By slowing down and carefully articulating each sound, the practice helped build accuracy and greater awareness of vowel length — a key element in correct Qur’anic recitation.

The Deck We Used

The deck we used for practice is as follows:

It contains two-letter and four-letter combinations designed to reinforce long vowels and introduce semi-vowels in a structured way.

Introduction to Semi-Vowels

During the practice, we also began identifying semi-vowels, particularly when Waw (و) and Ya (ي) function as lighter glide sounds rather than full long vowels.

This distinction was introduced naturally through the reading exercises. Attention was given to recognizing:

  • When the sound is a full two-count long vowel
  • When it functions as a shorter, softer glide within a word

Understanding this difference strengthens both pronunciation and listening skills, which are essential for accurate Qur’anic reading.

Looking Ahead

In the next session, we will move from isolated combinations to practicing small phrases that include both long vowels and semi-vowels. This will allow for application in connected reading and help develop smoother flow in preparation for reading Qur’anic text.

Each session continues to build carefully on the last, laying a steady foundation for confident and correct recitation. Come join us for our free ladies-only session and continue this beautiful journey of learning together.
